The third meeting with the stakeholders of GHOST project was held on Friday, 11th December at Palazzo Badoer (S. Polo, Venice). Around fifty persons including public officials, representative of diving centers, fishermen and environmental associations, companies operating in environmental public services and producing bioplastics and fishing nets, museums, universities and research institutes attended this important annual event. The first session has been dedicated to present the results of the GHOST project obtained during the second year of activity and it was followed by a second session where experiences of fishing waste management developed in Veneto and Emilia-Romagna Regions within other projects and initiatives were presented. In the third session, focused on prevention and recycling of fishing waste, the speakers stressed not only the need to empower all the involved actors, particularly the producers of fishing nets, but also the possibility of using biodegradable materials for the construction of the nets. Finally, a number of entrepreneurial experiences of fishing net recycling have been presented.
A final round table, attended by representatives of the Venice Coastal Guard and the Veneto Region has allowed to deepen the issues of the application of the Plans for waste management at Venetian ports and the implementation of project initiatives coordinated by the Veneto Region aimed at promoting a greater sustainability of fisheries and livestock.
The GHOST team thanks all participants, in particular speakers, the participants at the round table and all those who expressed their point of view during the discussion, providing talking points and significant inputs.
