During the event Veneto Night - The European Researchers' Night, scheduled for 25 September 2015, IUAV, in partnership with ISMAR-CNR and Laguna Project, is organizing an info afternoon at the Institute of Marine Sciences (at the Arsenale in Venice)on the presence and effects of ghost nets and other marine litters including microplastics, spread in our sea. The event will begin in the early afternoon with departure from Piazzale Roma to Arsenale at 15 and return at 18 by reserved motorboat. Participants will attend the screening of several short films documenting the presence of waste and ghost nets on the seabed of Tegnùe (rocky outcrops located off the coast of Veneto), and will be informed on the activities that the project LIFE GHOST is carring on in our marine coastal area to contrast the abandonment of fishing gear at sea. Participants will be also informed about possible strategies for the recycling of abandoned materials as waste in the sea, but which can be recovered, and demonstrations will be carried out in the laboratory to show how microplastics, a category of plastic substances of microscopic size often invisible to the naked eye, are present in many products we use in everyday life, especially in personal care products. The youngest visitors can learn how to recycle in a fun and creative way plastic objects no longer used and intended to waste.
